Cloud Load Testing Service Webinar

Testing, Visual Studio 2013
On January 23rd, Microsoft’s Visual Studio Team is hosting a live Cloud Load Testing webinar which will be led by Charles Sterling and Manas Maheshwari.  With the introduction of Visual Studio Online launched in November 2013, software engineering teams now have a set of services that are available to them including the new Cloud Load Testing Service to help you easily discover performance issues of your application when it is being used at scale.  The Cloud Load Testing Service helps you execute load tests using Visual Studio Ultimate 2013 by taking care of the infrastructure, management, and administering of the load testing rig which saves you time and money. Microsoft includes a complimentary 15,000 virtual user/minutes in your Visual Studio Online account for you to use each and every month! …

Visual Studio 2013 Settings Sync & Licensing

Visual Studio 2013
With Visual Studio 2013 you can now “roam” various Visual Studio settings across multiple development machines. If you’re not familiar with the synchronization capabilities in Visual Studio 2013, here’s the list of what currently syncs: Appearance (Theme, Fonts, and Colors) Environment Aliases Keyboard Shortcuts Startup Text Editor Syncing is enabled by default (in Tools->Options->Environment/Synchronized Settings) and can be initiated by signing into a Microsoft Account by clicking on the Sign in link in the upper-right corner of Visual Studio 2013. Once you logon with your Microsoft Account, you will notice that the account you’ve signed in with is also displayed as the account Visual Studio has been licensed to. You can see this relationship in the following screenshot: To show this behavior in action, I’ve signed in with another Microsoft…

TIP: Visual Studio 2013 XAML Error

Tips, Visual Studio 2013, Windows 8.1
Since I upgraded to Windows 8.1 I’ve had various issues with Windows Store apps running in Visual Studio 2013. I would get strange debugger-related issues when I attempted to run an app though it would compile just fine. In fact, it didn’t matter if I ran the app locally or within the emulator, it would give me some strange debugger errors which were surfaced from non-managed code. I noticed that when I opened a XAML file in the XAML editor (within Visual Studio 2013) I would get the following error: I did some quick bing’n around for an answer and came across a post on Microsoft Connect that suggested drivers for a dual-video docking station might be at fault. It just so happens that I am using a Toshiba dynadock…

Where Did My Visual Studio 2013 Shortcuts Go?

Tips, Visual Studio 2013
If you have installed the recently-released Visual Studio 2013 you may have had to do a double take to find the Visual Studio 2013 shortcuts in your Start menu. In previous releases of Visual Studio, the Start menu folder the shortcuts are installed in have always been prefixed with “Microsoft”. For reasons unknown to me, Microsoft has removed the “Microsoft” prefix from the Visual Studio 2013 Start menu folder, as shown in the following screenshot: As you can see in the above screenshot, you have to scroll down a ways to find Visual Studio 2013. If you happen to have more applications installed that fall between the two, you may have to scroll quite a bit. This is not a huge problem, though I have been asked by others “why…

Team Rooms Extension for Visual Studio 2013

Add-ins & Extensions, Visual Studio 2013
With Team Foundation Server 2013 (and the related Team Foundation Service), Microsoft introduced Team Rooms. Team rooms allow you to collaborate across one or more projects (you can create as many team rooms as you like) using an interface similar to common chat software (e.g. Microsoft Communicator or Facebook chat). If you would like to dig into the details of Team Rooms, check out Mickey Gousset’s article in the September issue of Visual Studio Magazine, Team Foundation Server Team Rooms. Currently, if developers want to interact with other team members via Team Rooms, they must leave the Visual Studio IDE and switch over to a web browser to access the rooms. That is, until now. A new Visual Studio extension, Team Rooms for Visual Studio 2013, is now available that…
